[oro-], Sri, eigentlich Aurobindo Ghọse, indischer Philosoph, * Kalkutta 15. 8. 1872, ✝ Pondicherry 5. 12. 1950; Repräsentant des modernen Hinduismus, zum Teil verbunden mit abendländischem Denken. Aurobindo war revolutionär-politisch für die Unabhängigkeit Indiens engagiert und deshalb 1908/09 inhaftiert. 1910 gründete er in dem damals französischen Pondichéry (heute Pondicherry) einen Ashram, der ab 1926 von der als »Mutter« verehrten Mira Richard (* 1878, ✝ 1973) geleitet wurde. Für Aurobindo ist Erlösung ein gesellschaftlich-kosmisches Ereignis im Sinne einer neuen Stufe in der Evolution des Menschen, die mittels Yoga vorbereitet wird; seine wichtigsten Werke in diesem Sinne sind: »The life divine« (1940; deutsch u. a. »Das göttliche Leben«), »The synthesis of yoga« (1948; deutsch u. a. »Die Synthese des Yoga«).
